Lou and I would like to thank the Pagosa Fire Department in their attempt to rescue our cat from a neighbor’s tree. Yes, a cat in a tree. He was at least 30 feet up to start, and then went higher as attempts to rescue ensued, and was told he had been there for two nights while we were on R & R in Arizona. But, our champions are Sara and her mother, Kathy Sloan.

Having heard of our plight, they refused to let our cat stay in the tree another night with blowing wind and heavy snow. So, Sara climbed that tree ( by this time we estimate he was 50 feet up at the top), grabbed the cat, put him in her coat, climbed down the tree and came home with us to make sure he didn’t run away.

So, thank you Sara and Kathy Sloan. Kitty has stayed very close to home since the incident. You both, again, are champions.

We would like to thank everyone for the flowers, food, cards, phone calls, thoughts and prayers in our sad time; we lost a father, grandfather and wonderful friend.

Randy Talbot-Colorado State Troopers, Pete Gonzales-Archuleta County Sheriff Department, William Rockensock-Town of Pagosa Springs Police Department, Bob Case-Masonic Lodge, Raymond Taylor-American Legion/Veterans, and Pagosa Springs Funeral Home. If we have forgotten anyone, please forgive us, we are truly blessed to live in a community that cares so much.

Ambassadors

On Friday, March 15, the Archuleta County Crime Stoppers hosted the Harlem Ambassadors professional show basketball team for a night of high-flying slam dunks, hilarious comedy and feel-good family entertainment.

The Harlem Ambassadors would like to extend a special thank you to event organizers Annie Thompson and Elmer Schettler  who planned and promoted the game. The Pagosa Springs Pirate Pretenders proved to be an energetic, enthusiastic and challenging team and we thank all of the players for their good sportsmanship. The Harlem Ambassadors thank the community of Pagosa Springs for its warm hospitality and look forward to returning to Pagosa Springs in the future.

Thank you for the wonderful gift of a smile with teeth. I could never express my appreciation to all the people involved in selecting me as your candidate for new dentures. Thanks to the committees voting for me and for all your donations. Dr. Davis, of San Juan Dental Hygiene, and David Shrum, of Premier Dental Lab, have done a wonderful job. I look and feel 20 years younger, and soon I will be able to chew meat and vegetables.

9Health Fair

There is always an abundance of “thank yous” in The SUN and the Pagosa Springs 9Health Fair would like to add their share of thanks to all of the 200 volunteers, 16 Interactive Education Centers and 10 professional medical screeners who made the April 6 fair such a success.

The mission of a 9Health Fair is to promote health awareness and encourage individuals to assume responsibility for their own health. That was successfully accomplished in Pagosa when approximately 520 participants took advantage of six different low cost blood tests resulting in over one thousand blood screenings. In addition, 9Health Fair volunteers checked blood pressure and pulse for approximately 230 participants. Throughout the day, there were 43 spinal screenings and 31 breast exams provided. Sixty-four people had their vision checked, 46 participants had their hearing evaluated and oral screenings were provided for 55 fair attendees. 9Health Fair volunteers measured height, weight and body mass index for 86 participants and 67 people took advantage of the body fat skin fold analysis.

It is impossible to name each and every volunteer who made the Pagosa fair such a success, but without their commitment, there would be no 9Health Fair in Pagosa. We are fortunate in our area to have all of the elements of a flourishing 9Health fair; volunteers performing their assignments with a smiling face, and a community willing to support their local fairs. Thank you to all who participated. Everyone’s involvement is appreciated.

An amazing event happened on the evening of Sunday, April 21. The worship teams from seven local churches combined to form one team with one goal. They led more than 250 people in praises to our Lord Jesus Christ at Centerpoint Church. I would like to thank those from Grace, Pagosa Bible, Restoration Fellowship, Amazing Grace, Cowboy Church, CrossRoad and Centerpoint churches for their time, talent and desire to pull together as one people to praise and worship God. It was a night to remember. For all of those who missed this event, there will be another PraiseFest in a few months. Be sure to come. Your heart will be changed.

BBBS

This past Saturday, Big Brothers Big Sisters sponsored a bike rodeo for the kids in the program. Steve and Anya Potter from The Hub Bicycle Shop generously offered free labor to fix the kids’ bicycles for the summer. We then had a barbecue and Bike Rodeo where the kids competed in challenging bicycle games for prizes. Annie Thompson, the manager took time to teach the kids about the need for proper tire pressure and correctly fitting helmets. It was a really fun event that was attended by half of the kids in the program. They had a great time riding their bikes and playing Frisbee. The Hub gave the kids Frisbees for attending the event. Thank you to the Hub for hosting this wonderful event which allows the kids to have good working bicycles for the summer. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Basketball

The Pagosa Springs High School varsity boys’ basketball team would like to thank the community for all of their support throughout the basketball season. From the start of the season, the community filled the high school gym, traveled long distances to away games and cheered our team along the way. When we traveled to Fort Collins for the state tournament games, many people were either there in person, listening on the radio or watching on their computers. We, as a team, were so impressed and thankful to see all of the enthusiastic fans on the streets with the posters of “Pagosa Pride” as we returned to Pagosa Springs as state champions. The team appreciates all of the support of not only the high school community, but of the entire community and of the local businesses.

Traditionally, championship rings are purchased by the winning teams to remember and celebrate their accomplishment. Please join us in our efforts to raise the money to purchase our championship rings. We will be having a fund-raiser, selling autographed pictures of our team on the floor after the state championship win. We will be outside of City Market on Friday, May 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. If you would like to help support us and can’t make it, you can send checks to Pagosa Springs Boys Basketball, P.O. Box 1498, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147. Make the check payable to Pagosa Springs Basketball and note in the memo space, “Basketball Rings.”

I would like to thank all the people that made Week of the Young Child so successful. Tiffany Wilkins, Anette McInnis, Head Start and Seeds of Learning deserve a big round of applause for planning and putting the whole event together. A big thank you to Kate Lister, Jim Sellers and the elementary school for hosting the Kid’s Fair. It was a huge success this year with over 100 children and their families attending. A big thanks to Kiwanis, too, for providing a yummy hot dog, chips and lemonade lunch. Thank you, Rose Salas at Head Start, for making sure we all had poster board to make dolls for Doll Day. A big thank you goes out to Restoration Fellowship for hosting Night of the Young Child. It was the perfect place to cheer on and honor all our very talented local children. Thank you, BaiLee Gallegos, for emceeing the event, scratchy voice and all. You did great. A big thanks, too, to Ryan Searle for being the sound and music expert at NOYC. And last, but not least, a big thanks to Liberty Theatre for having a Week of the Young Child matinee on Friday. Week of the Young Child theme this year is, “Investing in Young Children Benefits All.” It truly does take a village to raise a child. Thanks, everyone.

Thank you to all the people that worked hard on making the special election concerning Reservoir Hill a successful voting experience in so many ways.  Thank you to all the people that voted — voting is your right and your voice.  Thank you to the sponsors of the petition for all your hard work gathering signatures to make the election take place — Mat, Julie, Jaime and Dan.  Thank you to Matt Roane for all your work in campaigning via Pagosa Votes.  It was about getting people out to vote as much as it was about the outcome.  The people of Pagosa Springs have spoken. Let’s move forward in a community spirited direction led by many and not just a few.  Thank you to all the supporters of The Friends of Reservoir Hill who have a vision for our park that is about the community and not just the tourist dollar.

We would like to thank everyone for their cards, hugs, presence, flowers and food during and after Carlie’s passing. We were amazed at all the support this little community can give, and are so grateful we live here in this wonderful town. Also, we would like to thank everyone who made a donation in Carlie’s name. I wish I could list everyone who has given selflessly of their time, support, kind words, money, etc., but I think the list would take up a whole page of the paper. Thank you, Pagosa.

Lander

After almost giving up hope of finding our stolen kayaks and gear, I received a phone call from Bear Creek owner Mark Stauth. Mark left me a voicemail, in which he explained two of his employees had found all our gear. I was just as shocked as the day the property was stolen.

Thank you to Ryan and Charlie. We are forever grateful that you took the time to look at what was stolen and were able to indentify it. Thank you to Mark for making his staff keenly aware of our loss and motivating them to help.

Thank you to the entire community of Pagosa Springs, for putting up flyers, informing people via word of mouth and keeping your eyes peeled. If it was not for the support of everyone, our gear might have been forever lost.

We are extremely blessed to be a part of such a caring community and hope to be able to return the favor some day. The return of our gear has made our year. Happy spring and happy boating.

Mermaid

A huge thanks out to Trace Gross-Sanchez, a 2011 graduate of PSHS, studying theater at Adams State College, for his work on the recent high school musical, “The Little Mermaid.” Trace did a workshop for students early on in the rehearsal process, focusing on character understanding and development and movement and space awareness. Trace also did extensive research on costuming for the show and the history of the original play on which the musical is based. Thanks to Trace for all his work in supporting the performing arts in our schools and community.

Benefit

Words cannot describe the outpouring of love and generosity showed at the Michael Martinez Benefit Chili Dinner held May 11. There are too many wonderful people to mention by name. Without all the donations, support, thoughts and prayers, it would not have been the success it was. We are deeply grateful to each and every one for their contribution. A great time was had by all. Thank you all so very much.

Gustafson

Thanks to Jim Stone, owner of the Buffalo Inn. During this last weekend, May 10, 11 and 12, he offered his place so people could come and go as they raised money first for the veterans who help other veterans in their time of need, and then a fund-raiser for Dolly Martin, who is fighting cancer for the third time. It has been a privilege enjoying music and having a good time. We are fortunate to have such a good man helping so many of us.

Joy

I want to thank Master Trooper Wiersma for the setting up and demonstrations he gave to the public about the danger of no seat belts. His rollover machine and the mannequins he used really opened the eyes of the people watching. I heard children tell their parents while walking away, “I am going to always use my seat belt.” I think any organization that plans a large or small event may want to contact the CSP and ask for a demo for your participants. I want to thank the Chamber for including this in the car show.

Martin

I would personally like to give a huge thank you to each and every one, especially the organizers, Mel Rosser, Kathleen Boca, Karma Raley, Mark DeVoti, Rachel Martin, who made this all possible.

I would also like to thank all of the folks for the gifts, cards, money, meals and support and love and for being there and being a part of my life.

I was overwhelmed by the generosity and love of all of you.

You will never know how much this has meant to me. I will never forget you.

Potticary

There are some really nice people in the world. Let me tell you about one. My husband left his wallet on top of the car and drove away after gassing up. Things went flying around 160 at the Sears turnoff. Our hero (last name Deadman) stopped, gathered everything up, called us and returned it all. Amazing, inspiring — makes you appreciate small town living and Mr. Deadman. Thank you.

A visit to the emergency room is always traumatic. But the Pagosa Springs Medical Center’s staff, a great bunch of dedicated, friendly, and supportive professionals, turned my visit into an easy stay. Harman

On behalf of the directors of the Fred Harman Art Museum, we thank all who joined us on Saturday, May 25, for our “Love our Locals” open house: Ray Padilla and his mother, Liliosa, kept the Gomez Store open all day long and that trip back in time through the store was such a treat for all of us; the San Juan Shootists are such a great group of people and their fast draw exhibitions are thrilling to watch and even participate in; Doug Chapin, the Red Ryder impersonator, was on hand to keep law and order; “Bullet Bob” Hite, the bandit, tried to rob the Gomez Store at least five times and was stopped each time by Red Ryder and his posse; all the cookie bakers who kept the platters full of delicious cookies; and, finally, all our guests!

See you next year, you betchum!

Tanner

I would like to thank the school board, the high school administration and faculty, and all the volunteer contributors to Saturday’s high school graduation ceremony. I am a parent of a 2013 graduate and wanted to express how moved I was by the ceremony. The ceremony was very well organized and featured beautiful music offered by the music department and its students and English faculty member Darcy DeGuise. The valedictorians’ speeches and class history were moving and the graduation video crafted by Pagosa High TV was nicely produced and presented. Most impressive was the main speaker, Sean Downing, whose words were poignant, heartfelt and whose meaning was very powerful. As a parent of a 2013 graduate, my thanks to all involved in making this ceremony memorable and meaningful. I am always impressed by the talent within our community and this final celebration for the Class of 2013 was no exception.

Justice Ministries

Justice Ministries of Pagosa, Inc. would like to shout “thank you” to the community of Pagosa Springs. Justice Ministries is a networking hub that pulls community resources together and meets needs in creative, fresh ways. Last year, we received over 240 requests for various types of assistance — everything from simply providing a ride to the doctor, stacking firewood or helping a senior citizen with a move. Countless pieces of furniture and appliances have been donated to our organization and, in turn, families have been blessed by your generosity. Close to 90 people volunteered in 2012 and helped make dreams come true. As a non-profit organization, we’ve been able to oversee 750 hours of Useful Public Service that directly benefit our community, plus we work hand-in-hand with Salvation Army and also partner with the Pagosa Outreach Connection. Thank you, Pagosa Springs, for everything — your donations, your time, your talent and for helping us send the message, “There is hope!”

We appreciate the use of their facility and look forward to fund raising with them again.

We would also like to thank the parents and people of Pagosa who supported us.  We couldn’t have done it without you.

The weather was perfect and the turnout was awesome. More than 70 adults and over 30 teens ran the 5k. Numerous walkers participated. From infants to seniors, the atmosphere was one of generosity, kindness and love.

CenterPoint Church allowed us to use the facility. Grace Church printed our sponsorship forms and entry sheets.

Item donations from: Eagle Mountain Mercantile, Goodman’s, Springs Resort and Spa, River Pointe, The Nail Room, Happy Trails, The Hub, Martie’s Mercantile, Heather Rose Jewelry, Sarah Jackson Jewelry, Jayne Marie Photography, Josh Keating Woodwork, Liberty Theater and Malt Shoppe. Individuals donated items they had purchased. Volunteers manned the silent auction tables. Bake sale and lunch items were donated and all treats were baked, cooked and sold by volunteers. More volunteers worked setup, takedown, water station, registration and cleanup. Others had positions as spotters, time keepers, taggers and recorders. Dell Mellette informed many of their antioxidant score. Rylie Knapp pleased many with her face painting. Rebellious Abandon played contemporary Christian Music. Many participants were backed by generous sponsors. We had many anonymous givers, including a gentleman who donated a horse trailer. All proceeds from every activity went to help Julie Knapp pay for her medical treatment.

Julie will be going to Switzerland later this month for treatment. Thank you, everyone.

Sixth-grade team

The sixth-grade team at the Pagosa Springs Middle School would like to thank the following people who helped us to create unique learning opportunities for our sixth-grade students:

Natalie Wood who helped to contact all the volunteers who came our to hunter safety range day: Pagosa Springs Fire Department, Pagosa Springs Emergency Response Team, Pagosa Springs Forest Service and their quick response team and several community members who gave of their time to teach our students about fire building, orienteering, camp cooking, trailing an animal, tying knots and so much more.

We would also like to thank all people from the Soil Conservation District who helped create our Conservation Day, which helped our students learn more about the unique environment we live in here in Pagosa Springs and how they can help to develop habits and practices that will help sustain our beautiful area. Cindy Purcell, who helped to contact all volunteers who came out to our Conservation Day: Dan Wand, Wendy Sutton, Kari Eden, Jerry Archuleta and Shaan Bliss. We would also like to thank the owners and caretakers of the Rafter T Ranch for once again letting us use their property for our trip.

BBBS

Big Brothers Big Sisters had their summer picnic the last weekend of June on Navajo Lake. George Lyle and Jim and Mellody Lesch were kind enough to lend us their boats, their expertise and time for a wonderful day on the lake. Only big and little brothers decided to go on this adventure and they loved swimming in the lake and riding on the inner tube that Jim provided. George took his houseboat and his ski boat, and gave rides in both, so there was lots of fun to be had. We found a great sandy cove full of swimming holes and lots of mud, just perfect for little and big boys. We enjoyed a nice picnic on the shore and it was a most wonderful day. Thank you to George Lyle and to Jim and Mellody Lesch for all they did to make this summer picnic extra special for the kids in the program.
